Scope and Content Inner Hall, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh In 1905 the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior of the new Midlothian County Buildings, designed by the architect, James Macintyre Henry. The buildings replaced the old County Hall which stood on the site. The inner hall, pilastered and columned in marble, leads to the main staircase. Its elaborate wrought-iron balustrade is decorated with elegant back-to-back winged ladies, a design repeated on the iron guard around the open roof light. Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944), one of the leading architectural photographers of his day, composed and processed his pictures with great care. The impact of his interiors was greatly promoted by his ability to enliven them using the play of light. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
