Scope and Content Dining Room, Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh The dining room of Craigcrook Castle was remodelled in 1835 during a major reconstruction of the house by the architect, William Henry Playfair. The room was photographed c.1891 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The room has a Jacobean-style ceiling, and a stained glass window with two female figures in the corner. It is furnished with much in the style of the period, with a 'heavy' sideboard and table, and the fireplace is draped in brocade and velvet. Patterns were frequently published in Victorian trade literature for drapery to canopy fireplaces. Popular materials were French drapery of silk velvet lined with brocade, but by 1891 the practice was beginning to be condemned in smarter circles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
