Scope and Content West Mill and Lindsay's Mill, Dean Village, Edinburgh Dean Village, one of Edinburgh's most ancient and picturesque villages, lies in the deep river valley of the Water of Leith beneath the tall arches of the Dean Bridge. It was originally the largest of Edinburgh's old milling settlements. West Mill (right) is a large early 19th-century mill, the only one still standing and roofed. Lindsay's Mill (left), originally built by James Lindsay in 1556, was rebuilt in the 18th century. Its water-power came from a weir immediately downstream. Miller Row, along the south side of the Water of Leith, was originally lined with mills. The close-built character of this bank was lost when Marr's Mill disappeared in the late 19th century, and Lindsay's Mill was demolished in 1931. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
