Scope and Content The Water of Leith Bridge and the West Mill, Dean Village, Edinburgh Dean Village, one of Edinburgh's most ancient and picturesque villages, lies in the deep river valley of the Water of Leith beneath the tall arches of the Dean Bridge. It was originally the largest of Edinburgh's old milling settlements. In the centre of the village is a single-arch 18th-century stone bridge which once carried the main road out of Edinburgh. Just over the bridge, on the north side of the river, is the early 19th-century West Mill, the only mill still standing and roofed. There was a mill on the site of the West Mill in 1573. In 1734 the Incorporation of Baxters (bakers) took over the mills, and rebuilt the West Mill in 1805. It ceased working in 1891 and lay neglected for years until it was converted into flats in 1972.
