Scope and Content View of the Dean Bridge, Dean, Edinburgh, from the Water of Leith Walkway The Dean Bridge, the principal bridge over the Water of Leith, was built by Thomas Telford 1829-31, and is one of his finest achievements. It carries the road from the west end of Edinburgh towards Queensferry over the deep ravine of the river. The four arches of the bridge span a distance of 136m. Slim piers attached to the main ones support flatter arches which carry the footpaths, an ingenious arrangement which gives the bridge lightness and style. This part of the Water of Leith Walkway winds along the thickly wooded south bank of the river from Dean Bridge to Stockbridge. The path was clearly designed at a time when ladies had long skirts and parasols, and gentlemen wore top hats. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
