View of workers' houses from SW

Description View of workers' houses from SW

Date 15/8/1996

Collection Scottish Farm Buildings Survey

Catalogue Number D 3280

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 741392

Scope and Content Workers' houses, Westbrough Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south-west This unusual steading was owned by Orkney's most famous land improver, the Duke of Balfour, who also owned Warsetter and Stove on Sanday. While the buildings have been much altered and added to, most date back to the 19th century and the older farmhouse is probably of 18th-century origin. This shows workers' houses from the south-west with gardens in front enclosed by a drystone dyke. The houses are located 150m south-east of the steading and are both single-storeyed and built of neat rubble masonry in a style traditional to the Orkney Islands. Flagstone is the customary walling material in Sanday and it is also widely used on low-pitched, wind-resisting roofs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
