Scope and Content Thrave Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south This late 19th-century farm has not been used since the 1940s except for one of the dwellings which has been converted into a Scout hut. The steading is of an L-plan except the two ranges are detached from one another. All are of neat rubble construction in the vernacular Orkney style. This shows the north-south range from the south, with the small byre closest to the viewer and adjoining the dry closet (toilet). Next to that is the byre and former hen house also with pointed rubble masonry walls bonded with clay mortar. The flagstone roofs of the buildings are in varying states of repair. Inside the small byre is one large stall and one small stall on the east wall, both with angled trevises (partitions). There are a number of wooden stalls for calves in the byre next door while the stable contains one stable stall in the north-east corner and next to it a double stall byre. Both have flagstone floors with the north-east corner of the stable being cobbled. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
