Scope and Content Brick press and automatic stacker, Kirkforthar Brick Works, Fife The Kirkforthar Brick Works was run by the Kirkforthar Brick Co Ltd, formed in 1965. The main raw material used was local sand from the Ladybank area of Fife mixed with lime brought from Yorkshire. Local lime proved unsuitable for mixing with the local sand. These materials were then chemically bonded to form bricks. This shows the brick press where the sand/lime mixture was compressed into bricks in the machine wing of the works. The automatic stacker, also shown, stacked the bricks ready to be mechanically transported to the autoclaves on the west side of the works, where the bricks were steamed under pressure. The sand and lime started in hoppers on the east side of the works. From there they were carried by conveyor to the machine wing for processing. They were mixed in a Mitchell 'pan mill' before being compressed into bricks ready for 'curing' under steam pressure in the autoclaves on the west side of the works.
