Scope and Content St John's Episcopal Church (the chancel), Princes Street, Edinburgh St John's Episcopal Church, at the west end of Princes Street Gardens, was completed in 1818 at a cost of £18,000. Designed by William Burn in the Perpendicular style, it has a splendid interior modelled on St George's Chapel, Windsor. The canopied stalls and panelling of the chancel are by Peddie and Kinnear who also designed the screen behind the altar in 1889 as a stone Gothic triptych with tile pictures of Christ, St John and St Mary. The canopied stalls and panelling in the chancel were inspired by the richly carved screen and stalls in King's College Chapel, Aberdeen, which are the finest surviving example of Scottish medieval ecclesiastical woodwork.
