Scope and Content St Serf's Parish Church, Dysart St Serf's Church was built in abut 1500 and abandoned in 1802. The tower (left) dominates Dysart's skyline. It bears a resemblance to a tower house and may indeed have served as a watch-tower in the area's coastal defences. Dysart, a pre-existing settlement on the outskirts of Kirkcaldy, became a burgh of barony in 1510 and a royal burgh in 1533. Originally a salt-making centre, it grew into a thriving port for exporting coal and fish. It declined from the 18th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
