Scope and Content Aerial view of Pittenweem, Fife Pittenweem became a burgh of barony dependant on its Augustinian Priory in the 15th century, and a royal burgh in 1541. Appearing in records in 1228, its port harboured a thriving fishing fleet, and was home to merchants trading with the Low Countries. This aerial photograph shows the burgh's centre. The 16th-century parish Church and Tolbooth stand at the far side of the graveyard. To their left is the Priory's distinctive L-shaped complex, and in the top left corner, the inner harbour. Pittenweem Priory was founded in the 13th century when Augustinian priors moved to the site from the Isle of May. The surviving buildings, probably dating from the 15th century, have been substantially altered and restored since the Middle Ages. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
