Scope and Content Coxstool, West Wemyss, Fife Coxstool was built in about 1900. The house is castellated, that is decorated with towers and crenellations like a castle. West Wemyss became a burgh of barony in 1551. Initially its economy was based on salt-making though it had a harbour by 1621. In the 19th century, the town became dominated by the coal industry.
