Scope and Content Warsetter Steading, Sanday, Orkney The lands of Warsetter were owned by the senior branch of the Sinclair family during the 16th century. The steading appeared on Murdoch Mackenzie's 1750 map of Orkney. The machinery of this threshing barn probably dates from the early to mid-19th century, though it has been upgraded and improved a number of times. Most important of these has been the addition of an oil-powered motor instead of the horse-engine. Threshing machines were perfected by Andrew Meikle in 1786. Initially power largely came from waterwheels or horse teams but steam-driven engines became more common in the later 19th century and subsequently motor-powered machines in the 20th century.
