Scope and Content Jenners department store, No 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh Jenners, on the corner of St David Street, was designed by Sir William Hamilton Beattie in 1893-5. This enormous pink stone building with Renaissance undertones, was, at the time of opening, one of the biggest department stores in Britain. The six-storeyed building has stonework with interesting detail; paired figures (caryatids) on the first floor, carved figures on the attic floor, and lots of strapwork. The corner was copied from the Bodleian Library at Oxford. As the previous shop, converted from the original Georgian houses on the site, burned down in 1892, much was made of the building's fire-proof structure, with iron columns and steel beams carrying 'Stuart's Granolithic ' fireproof flooring.
