Scope and Content Elevation of West Wemyss Tolbooth, Fife West Wemyss Tolbooth probably replaced an earlier building serving the burgh of barony. An inscription in the steeple's south wall once read: THIS FABRIC WAS BUILT BY EARL DAVID WEMYSS & TOWN FOR THE CRIBBING OF VICE AND SERVICE TO THE CROWN. There is a masonry break at first-floor level. This suggests that parts of an earlier building, possibly the now-vanished 16th-century tolbooth, may have been incorporated. The present bell and clock were installed in 1901 by James Ritchie and Son. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
