Scope and Content Plans of Inveraray Town-house, Argyll and Bute Inveraray Town-house replaced an earlier tolbooth of 1650. Sheriff-depute Archibald Campbell of Stonefield paid for most of the work because years earlier he had overtaxed the county and kept the extra for himself. The design was altered to include a third-floor school-room. The blocked doorway on the first-floor west wall probably dates to 1773 and led to the sheriff-clerk's house. The 19th-century modifications may mark the conversion to an estate-office. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
