Scope and Content Elevation of Tain Tolbooth, Highland Tain Tolbooth was built using a grant of 500 merks from the Convention of Royal Burghs, supplemented by voluntary collections from many Scottish churches. It replaced a 17th-century tolbooth which was in disrepair and suffering from severe storm-damage. Each floor of the steeple was originally a cell. For safety and security, a floor of flagstones on joists was installed in the second-floor cell in 1825-6. Below each of the 1877 clock-faces are four water-spouts which drain the parapet-walks.
