Scope and Content South side of Charlotte Square, Edinburgh The south side of Charlotte Square is a repeat of Robert Adam's 1791 design for the north side, but with larger windows and no sphinxes on the end pavilions. It was the last side of the square to be completed in 1811-20 by Adam's successor, Robert Reid. This side is a row of 9 houses behind a palace-front. At the centre is a large pediment, and from each side, plainer wings extend, terminating in two end pavilions. In 1820, although houses in Charlotte Square were sold for £2,000, or rented at £100 a year, they had no mains sewer. It was the nightly task of servants to collect the refuse for the cart which took it to the market gardens of the Lothian countryside. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
