Scope and Content View of the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy, The Mound, Edinburgh, from the Scott Monument In 1821 plans for a range of buildings running north to south along The Mound near Princes Street were submitted by the architects, Thomas Hamilton and William Playfair. In 1822 William Playfair's plans were approved. Two of Edinburgh's most notable Classical buildings, the Royal Scottish Academy (fronting Princes Street) and the National Gallery of Scotland, were designed by William Playfair in the Greek revival style. William Henry Playfair (1789-1857) was, more than any other architect, the man who earned Edinburgh its label, 'the Athens of the North' due to his many Classical buildings, often in dramatic settings, in the city.
