Scope and Content Photographic copy of perspective sketch of Kellie Castle, from north This perspective sketch was made in 1870 by the architect W F Lyon (b.1845). It shows the castle as seen from the garden. Although some architectural details of the castle, including the crowstepped gables and dormer windows, are accurate, some artistic licence has been taken; the garden was recorded as being in a badly overgrown state in 1870, rather than the neat, formal state seen here. In the 1870s, Professor James Allan Lorimer (1818-90) took on the lease of Kellie as an improving tenant. The Lorimers, including his famous architect son Robert (1864-1929) restored the castle, and laid out a fine walled garden. This work was continued by Robert's son, Hew Lorimer (1907-93), a renowned sculptor. Kellie Castle, in Fife, dates from the 15th century, when the lands of Kellie were held by the Siward family. The castle began as a single tower, which was then enlarged and added to over the centuries. In the 19th century, the Lorimer family leased the castle, beginning a period of restoration and improvement. In 1970, Kellie was purchased by The National Trust for Scotland, and the castle and garden are now open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
