Scope and Content View of the head of West Bow, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh The Lawnmarket or 'Land Market', one of the great open spaces within the city walls, ran from the head of West Bow to the old Tolbooth that adjoined St Giles. Here street traders or 'lawn merchants' sold produce from the land on market day. At the head of West Bow stood a timber-fronted house, built in about 1540 and demolished in 1878. The wooden arcades, the picturesque gables and the tall chimneys or lums, were all characteristic of 16th-century Old Town architecture. In the 16th century, Old Town houses were built to the height of seven or eight storeys, 'perhaps the highest houses in the world'. To make best use of available space, each floor was built out beyond the floor below, sometimes to as much as eight feet. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
