Scope and Content St Margaret's Chapel, Edinburgh Castle St Margaret's Chapel is the oldest building in the Castle complex. It was built in the early 12th century by David I. It has been much altered over the years, but it may possibly have originally been part of a larger building, perhaps a palace. David named the chapel after his mother, who was canonised in 1250. It went out of use in the 16th century and was replaced by a new chapel under the present Scottish National War Memorial. The old chapel was remodelled and used as a munitions store. St Margaret's Chapel lay unrecognised until the 19th century. It was then regarded as a particularly romantic site because of the link with St Margaret and the restoration work included a new entrance (in the photo), since replaced by a simpler door.
