Scope and Content East Lothian once had strong traditions of ceramic production but the last factory pottery at Prestonpans closed in the middle of the 20th century. Thereafter, the field was represented by a number of ceramic artists and craftworkers, including Patricia and Leonard Hassall who worked from the Hand Pottery in Dunbar. This is a decorative vase comprising an eccentric globe with opposing apertures topped with stylised trees, birds and seated figure. It has a rich white glaze over a buff earthenware body. In the nineteen sixties and after, East Lothian District Council encouraged craftworkers to settle in the county by providing 'workshop homes'. Some were built from scratch as part of new developments; others were created when old properties were renovated. Other craftworkers worked from premises that they had found themselves.
