Scope and Content This photograph illustrates a well dressed older woman of the later nineteenth century. Although taken in a family setting, her pose has been arranged in a similar manner to those used by professional photographers and an attempt has been made to create an appropriate setting with drapes and carpet. This is a black and white photograph digitised directly from a 1/4 plate glass negative. The subject is a formal portrait of a seated elderly woman. Over her full skirts she wears a cloak and she has tucked her hands into a fur stole. This photograph is part of a family collection made from the 1880s-1900s. Dr Richardson settled at North Berwick where he established a medical practice. He photographed family members, trips and events and, when his son founded North Berwick Museum, the collection was deposited there. It now provides glimpses life of the period.
