Scope and Content John MacIntyre, a former provost of North Berwick, became a life member of the town's reading and recreation club. The patronage of influential townspeople was important for the success of the club, which had been founded as a means of self-improvement for tradesmen and workers, and as an alternative to public houses. This is a printed paper receipt completed in handwritten ink script and endorsed with a penny stamp. It records the name of the payee, John MacIntyre, and the Treasurer, Robert Bee, of North Berwick Reading and Recreation Club. The war of 1914-18 disrupted many of the social and sporting clubs in North Berwick. Some for forced to close for the duration. Others, such as the reading and recreation club established in a managed property in the Westgate were patronised by the many troops billeted in the town.
