Scope and Content This short row of houses was built around 1840. The street leads from Dunbar High Street to the harbours and was renamed Victoria Street around the time the buildings went up; it was formerly the Sea Port (or Gate). This is a short terrace of two storey houses on a sloping street; the ground floors are interrupted by large, arched carriage pends. The frontages are harled and painted different shades. The terrace terminates in a larger tenement at a corner. Construction of new houses outside the limit of Dunbar's medieval boundaries started in the Georgian Period. The first new developments were on gap sites adjacent to the High Street (in the background of this photograph). They were occupied by the town's growing middle class.
