Scope and Content This large iron key was used to secure a cell in Dunbar Town House. The lock for this key is still in place in a strong door bound with iron bands and bolts, although both have been superseded by a rod and clasp secured with a padlock. This is an iron key with four oval chain links. They hey has a loop handle (bow) attached to a tapering tube (shank) with a serrated bit pieced with an oval hole. The body is crudely finished and the maker's tool marks are still evident. Dunbar Town House was built (around 1600) with pair of cells on the first floor. They were used to imprison debtors and criminals sentenced in the Burgh Magistrates' Court until a new prison was established in the nineteenth century.
