East Lothian countryside

DP 466890

Description East Lothian countryside

Date c. 0/1905

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 466890

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This is a photograph of an entranceway to Balgone Estate near North Berwick, about 1905. Similar lodges existed at other entrances; most were leased to estate staff and farm servants. This is a black and white photograph printed in 2000 from an Edwardian cellulose nitrate negative. The subject is a cottage behind a stone and wood fence and gate, with a road between mature deciduous trees. In East Lothian estates based on medieval holdings persisted as economic units into the 20th century. Frequently, land around the principle residence on an estate was surrounded by a wall with lodges or gatehouses at the entrances. Within, the landscape might include parkland, woods and farms.
