Scope and Content This Dundee Improvements Plan of building ground between the Nethergate, Dock Street, Union Street and Crichton Street, was drawn by William Mackison, Burgh Engineer, in October 1890. The scale of the plan is approximately one inch to forty-three feet. William Mackison trained as an Architect and Engineer with his uncle in Stirling, first becoming Burgh Surveyor there and then at Dundee from 1867 to 1906. He designed Commercial Street in 1871, with French Rennaisance details. In 1906 Mackison claimed £40,000 from Dundee Town Council for additional work undertaken outside his normal duties. He was suspended and then dismissed. Subsequently, he took the Town Council to court, but died before the case could be heard.
