Scope and Content This image shows the handsome offices of the Harbour Chambers and Customs House in 1930. Their appearance is little changed to this day. The photograph, taken by Watt & Sons, was printed on page six of the Dundee Free Press, 1st August 1930. The grandeur of such a building reflected the prosperous past of Dundee's shipping trade and commanded a prominent position by one of the entrances to the then considerable harbour facilities. The magnificence of the building was a stark contrast to the hundreds of slum houses situated within less then half a mile. The Harbour Chambers and Custom House in Dundee was designed by James Leslie and John Taylor in 1842 - 1843. It was one of the largest Custom Houses in Scotland, being three storeys high and thirteen bays long. SCRAN 'when' data: 1930 image created 1 August 1930 image printed 1842 - 1843 designed.
