Scope and Content This photograph, taken in March 1982, shows the tenement at 3-11 Hawkhill, looking down Johnston's Lane. The dilapidated state of the buildings is clear, with business premises boarded up and windows either open to the elements or boarded up. Demolition and renovation work was desperately required in Hawkhill in the early 1980s. As the jute industry had declined, so too did many buildings at Hawkhill become derelict. Most of the old houses and factories at Hawkhill were demolished either to make way for the new road to the west, which took the name Hawkhill, or many were renovated by the University of Dundee for student occupation.
