Scope and Content One major University development, which was completed in 1976, was the creation of a Botanic Garden. It comprised approximately twenty acres and is located between Perth Road and Riverside Drive, a mile west of the University precinct. The idea of a Botanic Garden was first mooted by Mr. Machar, Curator of the University Grounds in the 1960s. He was enthusiastically supported by botanists in the Department of Biological Sciences. With the help of Sir Garnet Wilson, Principal Drever set about getting the required financial backing from the Carnegie Trust for Universities of Scotland and two other trusts. The Botanic Garden itself was created by Mr. Edward E. Kemp, who was appointed Curator in Dundee in 1971. By 1980, on his retirement, the Botanic Garden had reached a surprising degree of maturity.
