Scope and Content The foundation stone in this photograph is reputed to be the actual King's Cross Stone where King Kenneth MacAlpin, who became the first king of the united Scots and Picts in 843, placed his standard during a battle fought between the Scots and the Picts. The stone stands on a lawn to the south of the Mansion House in Camperdown Estate. King's Cross Hospital was opened in 1889 for as the first permanent fever hospital in Dundee for the treatment of infectious diseases, such as typhus, smallpox, diphtheria, etc. Initially there were only two wards, but by 1913 it was extended to seven wards and a variety of ancillary buildings. This photograph shows Nurse Thow looking at the Foundation Stone. SCRAN 'when' data: 843 context 1913 extended 1889 opened.
