Scope and Content Over 2000 fragments of window glass have now been excavated from the Aberdeen Carmelite friary site, built in the 14th century and demolished sometime after the Reformation in 1560. This piece has been painted with a reddish-brown pigment. Most of the pieces date from the 13th and 14th centuries and have 'grisaille' decoration popular at that date: linear, curvilinear and ring-and-dot motifs with some areas of cross-hatching. Little is known about glassmaking in Scotland but in 1517 Friar Strang appears in the obituary calendar of the Aberdeen Franciscans as 'priest and glassworker...who did much of the work of his craft in many convents throughout the Province'. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
