Arthritis at Aberdeen Carmelite friary

DP 453035

Description Arthritis at Aberdeen Carmelite friary

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 453035

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This is one of the feet from a skeleton excavated from inside the church of Aberdeen Carmelite friary in 1994. This skeleton belonged to a middle aged male who had severe pathological changes to most of his bones. This individual was probably suffering from psoriatic arthritis, which occurs in about 5% of people with psoriasis (a skin disease). The synovial joints are often affected as well as tendon and ligament attachments. The cause is unknown. Synovial joints - eg the backbone, feet and hands - are usually most affected. The feet bones have become eroded and there is widespread new bone growth due to infection. Three toe bones have become fused together and would have been very painful. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
