DP 453034

Description Arthritis at Aberdeen Carmelite friary

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 453034

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This is the lower jaw from a skeleton excavated from inside the church of Aberdeen Carmelite friary in 1994. This skeleton belonged to a middle aged male who had severe pathological changes to most of his bones. This lower jaw has ante-mortem loss of most of the molar (back) teeth. They were lost well before death and the bone has re-moulded over the tooth sockets. The remaining teeth are also very worn. This individual was probably suffering from psoriatic arthritis, which occurs in about 5% of people with psoriasis (a skin disease). Joints such as the knee, backbone and feet are affected as well as tendon and ligament attachments. The cause is unknown. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
