Scope and Content During the excavations at the site of the Carmelite friary in Aberdeen during 1980-1 and 1994, over 200 skeletons were excavated. Much of the skeletal material was quite well-preserved, allowing specialists to examine it. All the skeletons were examined at Aberdeen University. It was possible to determine the age, sex and height of many of the individuals. There were males and females, adults and children, including premature infants to teenagers. Many of the skeletons showed signs of disease and injury: wounds caused by blows to the head (including blade injuries); fractures; infections including tuberculosis; degenerative disease including arthritis; and signs of stress and malnutrition. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
