Scope and Content Excavations at the site of the Carmelite friary in Aberdeen took place in 1980-1 and 1994. The latter excavation took place during the development of the area into flats. The archaeologists were surrounded by evidence of building. Heavy machines were always present and were used by the archaeologists to remove the car park surface, which had covered the site previously. Workers' huts and portacabins took up much room, allowing little space for the archaeologists. Archaeological trenches were dug individually, not allowing the archaeologists the chance to see whole buildings at one time. A trench was excavated and then filled in to allow builders to use the area while the archaeologists moved to the next trench. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
