Worked bone object from Aberdeen Carmelite friary

DP 452942

Description Worked bone object from Aberdeen Carmelite friary

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 452942

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This object was found in a foundation trench for one of the walls of the west range of the Carmelite friary in Aberdeen during the excavations in 1994. It has been made by carving a piece of animal bone and piercing small holes in it. The object is broken at both ends, but there is evidence of three holes, perhaps for fastening to another object. The lack of green stains around the holes suggests that it was not attached with copper alloy rivets. Scratches on the surface of the object may have occurred while it was being fashioned when it was in use. It is not yet certain what the object was used for. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
