Scope and Content This sherd of pottery was found during the excavations at Aberdeen Carmelite friary in 1994. It is the base of a jug which was made in Westerwald around the 17th century. It is decorated with distinctive bands of blue glaze. Westerwald is an area situated on the east bank of the Rhine opposite Koblenz. A major stoneware production centre started there in the late 16th century. Westerwald potters produced a grey stoneware with an overall blue-grey salt glaze which is caused by the spreading of volatile cobalt blue, used for decoration, over the whole surface. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
