Bracelet from Aberdeen Carmelite friary

DP 452910

Description Bracelet from Aberdeen Carmelite friary

Date 0/1980 to 0/1994

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 452910

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This is the left wrist of a male skeleton found within the church of the Aberdeen Carmelite friary. The bracelet was the only piece of jewellery found at this site. Most people were buried unadorned. Towards the right of the picture the two bones of the left arm (ulna and radius) can be seen. Just to the left of the bracelet are the small bones of the wrist and then the finger bones. The green staining is caused by the decay of the bracelet, which is made of copper. As copper decays, green salts leach out. Green stains are common on human remains caused mainly by decayed shroud pins. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
