Scope and Content Over 200 burials were carefully uncovered, drawn, photographed and lifted from the site of Aberdeen Carmelite friary during the excavations there in 1980-81 and 1994. This individual had dental abscesses, which had formed around the root of the teeth. The holes above the teeth in this maxilla (upper jaw) are the result of abscesses bursting into the mouth. They would have been incredibly painful. They usually developed when the teeth were very worn due to advanced age. When the tooth is worn to the root, infection can get in allowing an abscess to form. Teeth were less decayed than they are today, however. Caries (decay) was fairly rare because the diet did not contain as much sugar as it does now. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
