Scope and Content Over 200 burials were carefully uncovered, drawn, photographed and lifted from the site of Aberdeen Carmelite friary during the excavations there in 1980-81 and 1994. This middle-aged adult male had multiple healed rib fractures. The two ribs on the right are each broken in two places - at the front and the back. This suggests a crush injury. They have healed with a small amount of new bone growth, especially the rib on the left where there is a 'spike' of bone sticking out. Fractures are fairly common in medieval populations and many were probably associated with the occupation of the individual. There were no x-rays then, so it would have been more difficult to treat fractures where there is no evidence on the surface. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
