Skull anomalies at Aberdeen Carmelite friary

DP 452877

Description Skull anomalies at Aberdeen Carmelite friary

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 452877

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Over 200 burials were carefully uncovered, drawn, photographed and lifted from the site of Aberdeen Carmelite friary during the excavations there in 1980-1 and 1994. This is the rear of one of the skulls of one of the individuals buried within the church. The skull is made up of several bones. At the back of the skull three large bones join. It is possible to see the sutures (lines between the bones) in this photograph. There are also extra bones (wormian ossicles) which are not normally present. These extra bones were seen in five individuals found at the Aberdeen site, a higher proportion than in many populations. It is possible that these five people may have been related. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
