Dental disease at Aberdeen Carmelite friary

DP 452876

Description Dental disease at Aberdeen Carmelite friary

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 452876

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This adult skeleton showed some of the Aberdeen Carmelite friary's most severe dental disease. The teeth are covered with plaque (calculus) which suggests that this person was not attentive to oral hygiene. The teeth are very worn, probably due to a coarser diet than today. One of the upper teeth had an abscess which had burst out into the mouth. The hole can be clearly seen above one of the upper molars. The tooth had remained in place however. The pitting around the gum line is periodontal (gum) disease which is quite mild on the maxilla (upper jaw) in this individual. It was generally more severe around the region of the molar teeth. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
