Scope and Content During the excavation of the west range of Aberdeen Carmelite friary in 1994, a room was excavated which was probably the friary kitchen. It had a drain built on to one wall and this cobbled fireplace against another wall. Granite cobbles were laid in a rectangular arrangement to create a fireplace for this room. It was covered with burnt material including charcoal and orange burnt clay. A heavily burnt area can be seen above the scale (which measures 1m). This fireplace replaced an earlier tile example that was constructed of poorly made ceramic tiles which were made locally, possibly on the site. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
