Scope and Content Excavations at Aberdeen Carmelite friary revealed the church and west range as well as areas around the friary, including the graveyard. Over 200 skeletons were carefully uncovered, drawn, photographed and lifted in advance of the building of flats. This individual was buried within the church of the friary, probably in the 16th or 17th century. The burial had not been disturbed by later medieval grave digging and was therefore complete. The individual was an early middle-aged female. She had widespread slight degenerative joint disease (arthritis) at the hip and knee, and two of the bones of one finger had become fused, probably due to infection. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
