Scope and Content Excavations at Aberdeen Carmelite friary have revealed that the church had substantial buttresses at its corners. They were mainly constructed of local granite boulders but were faced with sandstone imported from Cowie, near Stonehaven. Much research still needs to be done in comparing the Aberdeen Carmelite church remains with other religious buildings, both locally and nationally. The medieval Carmelite order had houses in Scotland, England, Ireland and Europe. On 10 February 1495, the college dedicated to St Mary, was founded by papal bull at Old Aberdeen. It was 10 years before the buildings were started, the students being taught in the canons' manses around the Cathedral of St Machar. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
