Scope and Content During the excavations at the Carmelite friary in Aberdeen, parts of the church and west range were excavated. In this trench, the walls of the church can be seen (centre bottom) surrounded by a cobbled surface. This photo was near the start of the excavation. The cobbled surface probably dates to the 15th or 16th century and there is still over a metre of soil and stones to be removed before the excavation is finished. The most recent layers are removed first. Everything is carefully recorded: tape measures can be seen in use (centre) while the person on the left is making a scale drawing of the whole trench. The site was in the middle of a building development and so all the diggers are wearing hard hats. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
