Scope and Content This burial of a child aged between 2 and 3 years took place within the church of the Aberdeen Carmelite friary in the medieval period. The skeleton is complete and well-preserved but there is no evidence of cause of death. Advances in medicine in the 20th century mean that people are healthier and living longer. In the medieval period, people died younger and many more children died than today. Disease which can now be cured were often the cause. Many of the diseases which killed people in the past were quick acting, leaving no trace on the skeleton. Evidence for diseases such as arthritis and tuberculosis have been found on the skeletons from Aberdeen Carmelite friary. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
